Great Walks booking — FAQ
- How far in advance can I book Great Walk huts?
- Bookings open on 1 June each year for the upcoming season (November–April). Milford and Routeburn huts sell out within hours of opening — set a reminder and book as soon as the window opens.
- Can I do Great Walks in winter?
- Yes — most Great Walks are accessible year-round. In winter (May–October), huts revert to Standard status with no staffing. You need a hut pass or hut tickets, and conditions can be severe. Check DOC for closures.
- How much do Great Walk huts cost?
- Adult prices range from NZD $28 (Abel Tasman, Rakiura) to NZD $90 (Milford, Routeburn) per night per person. Prices vary by season and hut. Check DOC's website for current prices.
- Do I need a guide for a Great Walk?
- No — all Great Walks are self-guided. However, guided options are available for most walks through DOC-licensed operators, which include transport, accommodation upgrades and guided interpretation.
